Windows 11 ships with defaults aimed at everyday use, not games. These are the safe changes worth making.
Before you tweak: back up your files and create a system restore point (search "Create a restore point" in Windows). Results vary by hardware and game.
Step by step
- Set the power plan to High Performance (or Ultimate Performance on supported systems).
- Check Game Mode is on: Settings → Gaming → Game Mode.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Turn off background recording in Settings → Gaming → Captures if you don't use it.
- Disable unneeded startup apps in Task Manager → Startup apps.
- Reduce visual effects: search "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" and choose Adjust for best performance.
- Keep Windows and drivers updated, then restart.
About memory integrity
Microsoft notes that security features like memory integrity (VBS) can affect gaming performance in some cases. Turning them off is a security trade-off; only do it if you understand the risk.
